This post covers my update of vRA 7.0.1 to 7.2 in my lab. Compared to older versions this is getting really easy and while doing this in a production environment has additional complexity and consideration I created this post to highlight how far this process has come since version 5 days.
There is a great KB from VMware that covers this in detail here and as this is a lab so as such I have no backups, just a snapshot on both my vRA appliance(s) and IaaS server(s).
Update vRA 7.0 to 7.2 pre upgrade snapshot
Upgrade vRA Appliance
The next step is to go to the appliance management page https://VRA-FQDN:5480 and click the check and then install updates buttons.
Then we wait while the installation happens:
After some time you will be presented with a success screen as shown. You may need to refresh the browser but this will not impact the ugprade.
I have then rebooted the vRA appliance
Once the reboot is finished check all the services are showing as REGISTERED
Update IaaS Servers
Next we need to upgrade the IaaS servers, this can be done with an MSI package or a shell script, I went with the MSI package as I only have 1 IaaS server in the lab there is also a pre-req for the script see here
Once done on the IaaS server I navigated to https://VRA_FQDN:5480/installer and downloaded the package for installation from the IaaS Installer link
The installer will prompt you for the appliance credentials
And select upgrade
I had an error with Java version which required an upgrade (64-bit) and teh setting of the environment variable to match.
This was the most complicated part of the upgrade and is fairly simple, see below
One more screen and some credentials and the Next button starts the upgrade.
